Google
Economic Impact

Google puts out a yearly report to detail the economic impact of the web and how Google helps small businesses to flourish. The data is collected on both a national and state level, along with vignettes of real businesses in each state. The report consists of an interactive website, a massive print report, and 51 individual state reports (includes DC).

I designed the websites and print reports from 2012-2016. The most recent report I worked on, the goal was to bring the design more in line with Google's Material Design, which was brand new and still not particularly well defined at the time.

A major challenge of this project is wrangling the content for 51 individual reports. I created photo guidelines for the photographers, worked with them to select images and provide guidance on retouching, then brought the final images into the designs.

I worked with our UX lead to create templates that work with a large amount of flexibility to accommodate many different types of photos, lengths of content, and different featured stats — while keeping the goal in mind of telling the stories of local business owners. I worked with development to nail the interactions and provided QA to ensure the final results were pixel perfect.

I was pleased with this iteration of the report — featuring broad washes of color, clean and simple typography, and buttery smooth interactions.
